People Power Party Assembly Member Bae Hyeon-jin 배현진 국민의힘 국회의원 was assaulted in an apparent incel terror attack. On January 25, the 41-year-old female lawmaker was accosted in a building lobby in Gangnam-gu District of Seoul by a 15-year-old male, who asked if she was Bae Hyeon-jin. When the legislator said yes, the assailant repeatedly hit her head with a brick, striking her at least 15 times before a crowd subdued him. Bae was hospitalized and received stitches; the attacker was arrested on the spot.
The attack on Bae came just weeks after the Democratic Party chairman Lee Jae-myung 이재명 민주당 당대표 was stabbed in the neck by a man posing as a supporter. Bae, a former news anchor, has long been a target of online hate from South Korean young men with toxic misogyny, who blame her for reportedly spurning the advances of incel leader Lee Jun-seok 이준석 and driving him out of the ruling conservative party. The assailant, a local middle school student, reportedly has a history of stalking female students.
