According to Statistics Korea 통계청, the government bureau in charge of collecting official statistics, Korea had 6.6m single-person households, or approximately 31.7% of all households. The proportion is a record high, having increased from 27.2% in 2015.

Many of them are young adults: 35.9% of all single-person households were persons in their 20s and 30s. Only 59.6% of single-person households were employed; more than half (50.5%) lived in a house under 40 square meters (430.5 square feet).
