The Corruption Investigation Office 고위공직자 수사처 formally arrested the impeached president Yoon Suk-yeol 윤석열, a criminal suspect for leading an insurrection by declaring an illegal martial law on December 3, 2024.
The CIO and the police began the operation to arrest Yoon at 3 a.m. on January 15, and arrested Yoon around 10:40 a.m. after members of the presidential security service refused to comply with their superiors' orders to protect Yoon. After a standoff and a consultation with People Power Party 국민의힘 lawmakers who came to the presidential residence, Yoon surrendered to the CIO and the police.
Yoon will be detained at the CIO office in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do Province to undergo investigative interviews. The CIO is expected to petition for a pre-trial detention warrant within 48 hours of the warrant.
