Poll: South Korean Public Divided on Samsung Heir Prison Term

Nearly half of the South Korean public thought it was excessive for Lee Jae-yong 이재용, the Samsung Group heir convicted for bribing the former president Park Geun-hye 박근혜’s spiritual advisor Choi Soon-sil 최순실, to receive a 2.5 year prison term.

In a Realmeter survey from January 20, 46% responded that the penalty was excessive, while 21.7% said the penalty was appropriate and 24.9% said it was too light. 80.5% of the conservative People Power Party 국민의힘 supporters said the penalty was too excessive while 49.5% of the ruling Democratic Party 민주당 supporters said the penalty was too light.
